TPRS Teaching for Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling
TPRS, created by Blaine Ray, first emphasizes listening and reading comprehension and then guides students to develop speaking and writing skills. It makes language learning a logical and natural process for all students. Brain research and ever-increasing knowledge of the language-learning process support TPRS.

Students taught with TPRS quickly build a foundation of basic fluency in their new language. Even beginning language students can use their second language skills to learn about the cultures of the people who speak the language they are studying. The national standards for language learning (ACTFL Standards) include developing students’ deep understanding of cultural diversity. This can be accomplished when cultural themes are the content of language lessons. Time spent serves a double learning outcome, reinforcing and enriching learning from other areas of the curriculum (history, art, music, etc.) while building second language skills at the same time.

Understanding by Design (UbD) is a curriculum framework created by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. Instructional planning is shaped by provocative questions designed to engage student interest and guide inquiry into the important ideas in a field of study. The goal is to provide learning experiences that lead students to “discover” information in a meaningful context rather than “cover” information that has little apparent relevance.
