World Language Teachers
Experienced and novice World Language Teachers gain new insight into the nature of language acquisition. TPRS adds to their repertoire of teaching approaches.
ELL (English Language Learner), Immersion and Bilingual Education Teachers
Teachers of English Language Learners often join the World Language Department to learn about language acquisition. The TPRS approach is used in many ELL classrooms at both the elementary and secondary levels.
Mainstream Classroom Teachers of ELL (English Language Learner) students
Often classroom teachers have little or no background in second language acquisition. This workshop provides theoretical background with practical applications useful in teaching grade-level content to ELL students.
Special Education Teachers
Case Managers often have students in World Language classes. These teachers gain insight into the nature of second-language learning that can be applied to practical modifications for diverse learners.
The open-ended format accommodates teachers who have never done any TPRS along with teachers who are experienced in the techniques. Novices focus on the basics while more experienced teachers select ways to polish their skills. TPRS is evolving as action research across the country results in higher and higher levels of student achievement. The diverse teaching styles of TPRS presenters give teachers ideas for variations that keep their lessons interesting. Successful TPRS teachers keep attending workshops to refine their techniques, to refresh their repertoire, and to recharge their batteries.
Selecting the format and setting a date are the first steps. Scheduling an in-service on a staff development day saves the cost of substitute teachers. A Saturday or a two-day Friday and Saturday are popular options. Also consider scheduling an in-service with a follow-up day a month or so later. This gives teachers the chance to practice skills in the classroom before the next level of training.
In-service logistics are easy to arrange when training is planned for one district only. A district can tailor an in-service to its specific interests or needs. School improvement research shows that the most beneficial staff development process is for a whole group of teachers to have a common learning experience followed by opportunities for collaborative work. Ongoing staff development encourages teachers to continuously refine their skills and share action research results in a supportive atmosphere. Districts have used Federal Title funds or curriculum grants to help budget these opportunities. Contact Jan for guidance in how to organize a district in-service.
Host a collaborative in-service in your school district. Invite teachers from nearby districts to join you. For every paid participant, a teacher from the host district may attend at no charge! This arrangement makes staff development available to a large group at a reasonable price. It also provides an opportunity for regional teachers to meet and network with each other. A minimum of 20 paid registrations is required. Contact Jan for guidance in how to organize a collaborative in-service.
